APPENDIX B. TEST DIRECTORATE COMMENTS

1. The experiment verified that the currently fielded system boresight is affected by firing. The Modular Weapon System, Enhanced Bracket for the M16A2, FN Mod Kit, and Rigid Frame with their mounting attachment held boresight during slow fire. During rapid fire, all of the devices decreased the amount of change in boresight but none of the fixes held completely.

2.Secondary goals were to check the suitability of the laser borelight and determine the 10 meter offsets for boresighting thermal and laser aiming devices using a borelight. Using a laser borelight allows operators to boresight their weapon in a field location, within seconds, without going to a 25 meter range. With the weapon boresighted using this method, targets can be accurately engaged at night at the same ranges they can be accurately engaged during daylight. Currently soldiers have inadequate methods of boresighting equipment in assembly areas. Without a more precise method of boresighting, the range of night devices is severely limited.

3. Additionally, a product called MILTEC-l was used to clean and lubricate the weapons during this experiment. MILTEC-l softens the carbon and made it easy to remove. There were no stoppages during this experiment caused by poor lubrication.

4. The AN/PEQ-2 aiming laser was used to check the boresight retention. The illuminator provided by this device was essential for accurate engagement at 300 meters. Without the illuminator, at that range, on the darker nights firers could not distinguish the target from the background. With the illuminator the target easily stood out.

5. The Startron LR-300 was used by test directorate personnel to monitor where the firer had their aiming point. The Startron LR-300 is a 16.9X lens that is designed to be used with night vision devices. This device provided a means for test personnel to determine that firers accurately placed their aiming point. The visibility provided by this device was excellent. The LR-300 provided enough magnification and resolution that the user was able to see the vapor trail of the round and determine the approximate
